Map of where the Jula live

The Jula of West Africa were once known primarily as merchants and traders and therefore migrated throughout the region. Due to their trading routes, they have been dispersed all over but are predominantly found in northeastern and north central Ivory Coast, southwestern Burkina Faso, Mali, and parts of Ghana.

The spiritual and ethnic center of the Jula is located in Kong, Ivory Coast. In the past, Kong had significant influence in the daily lives of the Jula. People would travel great distances to make a pilgrimage to the ancient mosque and parents would send their children to the Islamic school located in the area. Although it no longer holds the prominence it once had, the heart of the Jula is still considered to be found in Kong.
