Passion for Jula

Home

The Jula are a Muslim people with the village of Kong in northern Côte d'Ivoire (Ivory Coast) as their home and the center for their Koranic teaching. This strategic location is a trade link for the fertile forest regions to the south and the more arid regions near the Sahara desert to the north.

Jula Men

Due to the vast trading territories of the Jula, their language is now spoken by many; however, the Jula have maintained their ethnic separateness from other people groups, due largely to the way they distinguish themselves from other religions. Even in Jula families, separation is made from a non-Muslim. If you take away a Jula's "Muslimness," you take away their "Julaness." Religion, culture and identity are tightly wound around each other, to the point of creating the single unit known as Jula.
